Britflicks takes a first look at Luke White's horror BLOOD MONEY starring Ollie Barbieri (Skins, Anuvahood), Klariza Clayton (Skins, Harry Brown), and Scott Chambers, as well as debut performances from Sabrina Hansen and Nicholas Bourne.
Synopsis: After a botched art heist in France, a group of friends are left with a body on their hands and the gendarme hot on their trail. They hide the body and make plans to sell the painting and return home. But as they wait for the chance to escape from their secluded holiday home, they soon realise the body has gone missing. Paranoia and fear sets in and the friends begin to turn on each other. Soon it is clear there's a killer in the house and the group must figure out who is responsible before they all suffer the consequences.
This British film was produced by twin brothers Luke White and Ed White and with a screenplay by Emmy award winner Rosy Deacon (Shards). The film was shot over a period of two weeks on location in Normandy, France.

KiDULTHOOD, AdULTHOOD and BrOTHERHOOD have all had an impact on the way that multiculturalism is portrayed in British cinema, carving out its own path in order to portray the struggles of growing up in urban areas. Noel Clarke’s iconic ‘Sam Peel’ may be an unusual protagonist to some, however for many, he proved to be an influential character for which a forgotten generation could identify with as they matured together over the ten year span of ThE HOOD TRILOGY.
To celebrate the release of BrOTHERHOOD on Blu-Ray & DVD December 26, we take a look at Sam Peel’s journey through the trilogy, and exactly how the he has played a key role in representing urban youth culture in an important, real and reflective way.
KiDULTHOOD (2006) directed by Menhaj Huda
We first see Sam in KiDULTHOOD, a young troubled antagonist, who has unfortunately become a Ladbroke Grove bully. When Trife and his friends come looking for revenge after Sam steals his Gameboy, Trife knocks Sam’s mum over after beating him up in his own home. We follow Sam as he faces moral struggles between sticking up for his family and trying to attain the respect he desires, and although the film ends with an accidental fatality, it is integral to the narrative that Sam must pay the price for what he did. KiDULTHOOD and the character of Sam Peel have been criticised for ‘glamorising’ violence, but others argue that the film is a cautionary tale and stands to help teens who, in reality face the same challenges, realise what will happen if they make poor choices, and in turn, helps a wider audience understand the bigger issues that develop in urban London.
AdULTHOOD (2008) directed by Noel Clarke
Six years on in AdULTHOOD, audiences find Sam leaving prison as a seemingly reformed man. However, with guilt still heavy on his shoulders and the knowledge that people are out to get him, Sam is conflicted over whether to return to his old life to find and stop who’s after him at any cost, or continue on the mature path he aimed for in prison. Young, proud and still teetering on naivety, Sam seeks out who wants him dead and runs in to Jay, the best friend of Trife. Sam is then faced with the ultimate choice, quickly realising that Jay is on the same path as he was six years ago, and decides instead to move forward. Following Sam in AdULTHOOD not only showcases a realistic tale of redemption, but also teaches audiences to not make the same mistake twice.
BrOTHERHOOD (2016) directed by Noel Clarke
Sam returns ten years later, with a family and a hardworking attitude. But after his family are threatened by a mob wanting to settle an old score, it soon becomes clear that his old street smarts are not enough. With past demons close at his heels, Sam is forced to delve back into the criminal underworld and rely on the help of past acquaintances, whilst fearing that the peaceful life that he fought for will always seem out of reach. Though he longs to leave his past behind, Sam must accept that violence has defined who he is, and in order to defeat his enemies, he must also conquer the part of himself that challenges him the most. Sam’s progression to the man at the end of BrOTHERHOOD brings awareness that there can be ways out of the stereotypes that people are sometimes born into.

Paul Herbert’s 19-minute short film is a dystopian fantasy set in the near future in a prison-like language school for adult foreigners in Britain. It’s a 1984-like vision, where education has been reduced to box-ticking for weekly multiple-choice tests that are designed to be so easy that they are always passed, and teachers don’t give the lessons themselves, but are relegated to being mere screen minders to the Big Brother-like onscreen teacher, the Autoprof.
Both teachers and pupils alike are dressed in colour-coded boilersuits and they inhabit a bare, sparsely furnished building (a bare set design by Anne Bourmane). In this grim world, Virgil (Tim Hayward) is the Winston Smith figure, the cowed English-language teacher struggling to hold onto his meagre zero-hours contract, in fear of unemployment as newspaper headlines say that education is being slashed.
Then two events shake up his dismal life. A flirty new pupil, his Julia figure, Marie (Laila Rose Bouromane), whose number is 101, arrives in his class wearing the wrong uniform, and their eyes meet; and he is faced with the dilemma of having to fail a student’s test paper for the first time or falsify the mark – or rather, in the language of the script, where fail is a non-word, to ‘unpass’ it, a teaching failure that would have serious consequences for him.
The director of the language school, Mangle (John Gannon) is suitably dictatorial. He keeps autocratic order through his shaven-headed, brutal enforcer Butch (Tommie Grabiec). There’s an atmosphere of menace, where dehumanised individuals, known by numbers not names, are crushed by an inflexible system. Though the setting is clinically white, expressionistic lighting at times enhances threatening situations or individuals.
Written and directed by Paul Herbert, THE ENGLISH LESSON is a well-thought-through fable of a future of austerity and its effect on education and employment, and where it could be taking us, but with its twist-in-the-tail ending, it's a future in which the power of human contact may still manage to find a way around repression.
The film won an award at Canada Shorts, the Canadian and International Short Film Festival, and was in Official Competition at the Bucharest ShortCut Cinefest in November. It premiered at Glasgow Blueprint short film festival in September.
Paul Herbert has written, directed and produced five original short narrative films: Autumn Drift (2014), Winter Will (2014), The Flight of Iro and Casper (2015), The English Lesson (2016) & Air Tax, which is in post-production. He is currently developing a sixth short film and writing a screenplay for a feature.
Britflicks' Joanna Ebuwa had the pleasure of visiting the set of WE STILL STEAL THE OLD WAY, meeting cast and crew, and seeing first-hand what goes on behind the scenes when making a British gangster film.

Featuring the original cast of loveable gangsters, Ian Ogilvy (Return of the Saint), Chris Ellison (The Bill) and Tony Denham (Vendetta), WE STILL STEAL THE OLD WAY sees the ageing criminal outfit carrying out a daring robbery, only to be caught in the midst of their heist. Sentenced to hard time in Britain's toughest prison, they encounter a nemesis from their past intent on settling an old score.

Producer Jonathan Sothcott commented, "“WE STILL STEAL THE OLD WAY delivers everything the first one did but it’s a more performance driven movie. It’s much more intense for the guys because of this focused environment, more violent, it’s funnier, the Ogilvy one-liners are very much in attendance and just expect a nasty bastard of a film.
What makes this sequel really special though is the addition of Billy Murray as the villain. He's utterly, magnificently evil in the movie - he really is a brilliant villain and it's great to have such a fine actor back on screen”.

Cut off from the world Andrew spends his evenings watching the neighbours and becoming infatuated with Kem (Yennis Cheung), a beautiful Chinese girl.
When Amy (Pippa Nixon), a married woman he meets online, witnesses Kem’s kidnapping, Deeley tries and fails to get the police involved. He is left with no choice but to try and find Kem himself, fighting his own anxieties as he strives to find someone whom the world is happy to forget.

Following hot on the heels of HOOLIGAN LEGACY, Nicholas Winter's UNDERCOVER HOOLIGAN tells the story of Michael Clarke (Kris Johnson), who due to his brutally violent policing tactics finds himself on the wrong side of the law. He is then given a chance to redeem himself by going undercover to infiltrate the notorious London criminal enterprise of Terence Turner (Patrick Connolly), with the task of bringing the gang boss to justice.

Sophie has a steely look in her eyes as she insists on renting an old house in the remote countryside. She gives the estate agent a little extra cash for no questions asked. Sophia collects a man at the nearby train station. Joseph Solomon is a northern, coarse man. And an occultist. She needs him to perform an ancient invocation ritual, the Abramelin, to summon up Sophiaʼs Guardian Angel so her wish can be granted. She wishes to talk to her murdered child; itʼs a desire that consumes her.
The ritual is an extremely arduous one. They seal themselves in the house, possibly having to stay there for months as it plays out. As they get deeper into the rite they run the risk of turning on each other and going mad. But when Solomon finds out that Sophia has not been truthful about her wish, a greater danger threatens them. In the dark, they find that they are no longer alone in the house. They are now in the world of real angels, and real demons.
The house is surrounded with a line of salt. It is the only protection they have. They must not cross it, no matter how bad it gets, no matter how much they want to run. A Dark Song is the story of two people risking hell to journey through the darkness of their souls and emotional space.

The title of the film is taken from the French Surrealist artist, Claude Cahun’s (1894-1954) incomplete memoir that was written before her death and which covers aspects of her personal life, her childhood and her political propaganda activity and imprisonment in Jersey with her partner Suzanne Malherbe during the Nazi occupation of the island during World War II. As a sequel to Magic Mirror, Confessions To The Mirror, which in many ways reads as a letter to Suzanne, re-stages many of Cahun’s photographs, both still life and (self) portraits into moving image and sound. The film juxtaposes Cahun’s photographic and written images with my own process of tracing also the couples anti-Nazi propaganda work, projecting into, translating, interpreting and re-interpreting with sound, movement and colour. The performance of following the trace of Cahun's and their life and work is etched into the texture of the film, projecting images from their home in Jersey into my own domestic setting. Questions are asked concerning the relationship between interpretation and creation, aesthetics and politics, art and life and the possibility of artists connecting across time.

"Liam O’Flaherty’s 1925 novel of the same name was adapted twice for the screen, famously in 1935 by John Ford. This earlier version produced in sound and silent versions is arguably better. One of the finest films produced in a British studio in the 20s, on the surface it can scarcely claim to be British at all. With a German director and cinematographer, a Hungarian leading lady and Swedish leading man this is a truly European effort. But in fact this level of international collaboration was typical of the late silent period, particularly in Europe. Films of these years, now known as ‘international’ films by film historians were made specifically to appeal to multiple markets in different languages and drawing on talent from all over the world.

Dubbed, “The Egyptian Jon Stewart,” Bassem creates the satirical show, Al Bernameg. The weekly program quickly becomes the most viewed television program in the Middle East, with 30 million viewers per episode. The Daily Show with Jon Stewart averaged two million viewers.
In a country where free speech is not settled law, Bassem’s show becomes as controversial as it popular. He and his staff must endure physical threats, protests, and legal action, all because of jokes. As Bassem attempts to remain on the air, keep his staff safe, and not get arrested, he continues to let those in power know they’re being held accountable. Despite increasing danger, the team at Al Bernameg employ comedy, not violence, to comment on hypocrisy in media, politics, and religion.
Tickling Giants follows the team of Al Bernameg as they discover democracy is not easily won. The young women and men working on Bassem’s show are fearless revolutionaries, who just happen to be really, really funny.

It’s never been easier to shoot your movie. Rapid advances in technology have made low-cost filming options more accessible than ever before. If you have an idea, the ability to bring it to life is at your fingertips – indeed, we’ve already seen features shot on mobile phones secure theatrical release. But with so many budding filmmakers at work, the true challenge now lies in rising to the top of a crowded and competitive field, and ensuring that the finished film finds its audience. Creativity comes as second-nature to most filmmakers, but the simple unromantic truth is that a keenly analytical business mind can prove the difference between those who make it and those who don’t.
Filmmaking is so much more than pointing a camera and yelling ‘action!’, and those who can master the dark arts of pitching, negotiating, financing, publicizing, and marketing stand the best possible chance of success in this rough-and-tumble industry. And nowhere are these skills more evident than at The American Film Market. The annual event brings together the great and the good of international filmmaking for one week of non-stop networking, learning, and deal-making; with elevator pitches heard round every corner and industry players shaking hands on $1 billion worth of deals each year. Held between November 2nd and 9th in sunny Santa Monica, there’s still time for upand-coming filmmakers to secure their spot at the event, and take advantage of all it has to offer. But in the meantime, you can prepare with our round-up of the key Business Lessons for Young Filmmakers.
1. It starts with an idea
First films almost always start as passion projects - where financial gain is a secondary motive and purity of vision is valued above all else. So many of today’s most highly regarded filmmakers started their careers with a single, meaningful idea. Christopher Nolan rose to fame shooting Kafkaesque micro-budge mindbender Doodlebug with borrowed equipment while studying literature at University College London. Now-legendary director Paul Thomas Anderson blew his $10,000 college fund to make his first film Cigarettes & Coffee, and Neill Blomkamp showcased his love of sci-fi and subsequently caught the attention of Peter Jackson on his first project Alive in Joberg. Take inspiration from the films you love, the books you read, and take a look at what is going on in the world today to establish your vision and bring your story to life on screen.
2. Genre movies are a good way to make bank!
So what if your idea is a little ‘out-there’!? It’s not always the most obvious choices that gain traction with cinema-goers. When evaluating the financial details of 3,000 independent films from The Numbers’ financial database including North American and international box office, the American Film Market found that horror films feature prominently on the list of top low-budget breakout successes, alongside those from the rarely feted “faith-based” market. Don’t shrug off your idea just because it’s appears a little niche - having a very clear idea of your audience, and being able to appeal to their wants, is the key factor in making a financially successful film.
3. A good script trumps everything
As the old adage goes, you can make a bad film from a good script, but you can’t make a good one from a stinker. Invest time in your writing, or invest money in your writers. Arguably, the most time spent on your project should be in this stage of development, nailing those plot twists and getting the dialogue just right. When the idea is leaping off the page with wit and verve, it finally becomes ready to shoot. Here are three tips to help you get it right:
a. Focus on one genre - Screenplays should ideally fit into a particular definable genre, because genre translates to audience and budget (and therefore, to a payday for you).
b. Emphasize story development – To learn how to write a screenplay, it is better to develop fifty pitches than to write one script.
c. Get feedback early and often – It is better to get feedback at least ten times on your pitch before you write the script than to get ten reads on your script.
4. Know your numbers
Getting your film financed is the ‘Dragons Den’ moment for all filmmakers, where countless unsuspecting candidates have buckled under the pressure when asked for specifics on their ROI and business plans. Expect difficult questions and make sure you know how to answer them. Go into your meeting armed with examples – research tax incentives and costings and wow them with facts, figures, and statistics. For film financiers, few things are more reassuring than a well-prepared candidate.
5. Life’s a Pitch
The key to any deal. How do you persuade all those powerful people that your work is worth their time and energy? That it is more likely to make them money, and fulfil their creative passions than the scores of other scripts and book proposals they already have to clogging up their in-trays? Each year the American Film Market holds a Pitching Conference with industry professionals to help filmmakers in a high-stakes situation – here’s what they found:
a. Lead with the genre.
b. Do not talk about who has been attached, was considering, or has been interested in the project.
c. Do not refer to more than three characters by name.
d. Adapt to patterns of feedback.
6. Find your crew
Look for good actors, not big stars, and – just as crucially - do the same with all of the technical crew on a film. Finding a good editor, cinematographer, production designer and other key members of the crew are more important for a low-budget film than blowing a big chunk of your budget on a famous (or, just as likely, previously-famous) actor or actress. There are people out there who might lack instant name-recognition with the public, but who have played unsung roles in the making of scores of first-rate films. Take Affonso Goncalves.... He edited list members Beasts of the Southern Wild, Winter’s Bone, and 2016 Oscar nominee Carol. He could be your lucky charm too.
7. Make your content go viral
It doesn’t end when your film wraps. Marketing and PR is what gets audiences buying tickets, so plan for this. Shared content on social media is the fastest growing and perhaps most influential media force today, so when thinking about how to market your film, ensure your tactics pay close attention to digital-friendly methods. As a 21st Century media maker you’re already half way there – so think about transmedia platforms, experiential marketing, visual call-to-actions, and a strong website to boost your film in its final stages.
